Q. I remember someone saying that there's a way to have people's Facebook profile images automatically become your iPhone contact photo, but can't remember how.

A. Go to the friends section on the facebook application and you'll see the options to sync users pictures with your contact list. This only works for people who have their phone numbers listed on facebook

A. it automatically takes any of the pictures they can find from the website (unless ther is no pix on the site in which case u cannot show a pic)

At this time you can not make a avatar from a mobile device, perhaps that will change in the future.
For now profile changes must be made from a computer.
Go here , http://profile.yahoo.com top center put the arrow on your avatar, click change picture.
From there you can upload a image from your computer or import a picture from facebook. When finished click submit on the next page.
